Maureen Dowd, Liz Cheney and the Big Lies
I particularly recommend the Washington Post article cited immediately above. Lots of information and insight. Lots of insider, anonymous quotes. Helps to put the Liz Cheney situation in perspective.
So, What’s the Deal?
Liz Cheney is a rabid, diehard right winger.
Liz Cheney made no complaint about Donald Trump and his doings—instead, vigorously aiding and abetting Orange Man in a variety of ways—until Orange Man lost the election and started spewing the Big Lie.
Unlike most other rabid right wingers, Liz was astute enough to grasp that the Big Lie would be the downfall of the Republican Party.
Number One: Big Lie believers constitute only a majority of a minority, viz. the Republican Party.
Number Two: contrary to her idiot colleages, Liz grasped that riling up the base with the Big Lie was going to rile up the pro-democractic majority even more. If the 2022 election is about “Shall we have a democracy, or shall we throw away democracy in favor of a Dictatorship of the Idiocracy?” then democracy is going to win the ballot.
And Number Three: Liz also thinks, contrary to her idiot colleagues, that there is still a significant, albeit minority, portion of Republican voters who cotton to the likes of Romney, Bush, and her papa. She thinks that pushing the Big Lie will motivate those folks to sit out the next election, and as many elections after that as the party continues to push the Big Lie.
She thinks these things because, despite being a rabid right winger, she can read the signs and think three steps ahead.
Liz is a great cynic. She often lies like a trooper. But Liz is not an idiot.
