Of Career Paths, Intelligence, and Stupidity

Please pardon me in advance. I truly do not mean to sound like Joe Know-it-all. But, to understand our political economy, we have to keep in mind some basic points that are seldom mentioned. Among these: institutional career paths are very different in the kinds of people they promote. And an institution’s career path pretty much explains the kinds of people who arrive at the top.

The executive career path at our largest corporation rewards high intelligence, and it rewards the ability accurately to perceive reality and to anticipate market changes. The Republican politician career path rewards stupidity and the failure to recognize reality—or the ability to feign stupidity. See, for example, Greg Sargent, Josh Hawley’s ugly rant unmasks the fraudulence of the anti-‘wokeness’ crusade.
